Congratulations and Thank you for writing this piece. Haven’t read something so relatable in ages. Professional chef in a commercial kitchen but home cook at heart. I had HG and was repulsed by my life time love FOOD! Had a lock myself in my bedroom each day when my husband was cooking meals to have any chance of getting any food down…even if just plain boiled pasta. Thankfully through the other side of it now but will certainly not take it for granted again. Sending much love your way 🩷

Thank you for this lovely note. HG must have been absolutely awful, I am so glad you are through it now though. Sending love and solidarity your way too, and thank you for reading!! x

God this is relatable! Deeply the food part (I was writing a regular food newsletter for a news site in my first tri) but also the self-employed-person pressure to achieve as much as possible when you are feeling unbelievably shit… and the rollercoaster this creates when the thing you do for money is actively making you gag. Thank god carbs and butter and ice cream were there for you - for us! I’m 35 weeks pregnant now and all my aversions are long gone, but I don’t think I will ever forget how strange and appalling that period was. Glad you are past it now, and congratulations! <3

Although I don’t work in food it’s my passion, I love to cook and eat. It was a big shock when I got pregnant with my oldest daughter (now 13) when I had no appetite and no desire to cook. I lived off breaded chicken & pot noodles, I hadn’t had a pot noodle in like a decade at least. I also went right off red meat, lamb tasted so different. Wanted to say I can relate but my food & cooking mojo returned and lamb went back to tasting great ❤️

Congratulations! As someone who has cooked all meals for my wife during her pregnancy - and still doing so now that our daughter is 4 months old - it was difficult to find great sources on pregnancy friendly meals. With that I mean cool substacky type sources as opposed to national health service guidelines. So there definitely should be an audience for writing about whatever you feel good cooking and eating for the next year+. Plus those recipes might make the rest of a us a bit healthier as well. Of course still making room for the occasional steak.

I felt the exact same in my first pregnancy! I remember my mum saying not being able to talk to me about food felt like a huge hole in her life! It’ll get better ❤️‍🩹 sending love! (The only thing that sometimes still turns my stomach is fennel haha but otherwise fully back to normal!) women are amazing!

I was a healthy foods, cook from scratch person until my first 6 months of pregnancy where all I craved was egg (fried) and chips!! I put on 4 stone 🤭

Great read! Our kids (pre-school age still) love helping out in the kitchen. Something to look forward to down the line. Efficiency goes down a bit but the memories are priceless.

I know my wife just got a good baby carrier to strap them on the front or back (depending on age) and for a lot of babies they were perfectly content while she cooked. Definitely can vary by baby with how content they are to hang out.

Hard relate! Thank you so much for writing and sharing your experience. Currently in a v similar spot: first trimester, nausea all day, craving the most basic of foods and not feeling like I can tell anyone about it as it’s so early on. I’m so glad you’re better and there’s light at the end of the tunnel, definitely makes me feel less alone in the struggle x

Pregnant people are heroes, having to go through that (largely) alone. I was lucky enough to escape morning sickness and aversions in both of my pregnancies but god, my NEED for a sausage and egg McMuffin maybe… 3 mornings out of 5? I’m sure has taken years off me 🥲

Congratulations! A great piece of writing to come from it, too. When I was pregnant in the first trimester, ginger biscuits and crystallised ginger helped with the nausea. In my second trimester my cravings, bizarrely, were for rare steak and raw spinach - the midwives were always very pleased with my iron count!
